Commercial landscape irrigation, in planHow water gets from the supply to each plant: mainline, zone valves, spray heads for turf and drip for beds. Layout, zones and plant material come from the approved plans. Not to scale.
Commercial landscape irrigation, typical plan viewPlan view of a commercial landscape between a building and a parking lot. A turf panel in the middle is edged by planting beds with trees and shrubs. Water enters at a backflow preventer and travels through the mainline to three zone valves wired to a controller on the building. One valve feeds spray heads placed head to head across the turf; the other two feed drip lines with emitters at each plant in the beds.BuildingWalkParking lotControllerSpray heads, head to headDrip line with emittersTrees, shrubs and turfBackflow preventerMainlineZone valves

  • Where the system connects to the water supply. It keeps irrigation water from flowing back into the supply.
  • Wired to each zone valve and opens them on a watering schedule.
  • Pressurized pipe carrying water from the backflow preventer to the zone valves.
  • Each valve feeds one zone, so turf and planting beds are watered separately.
  • Lateral pipe to spray heads placed head to head so each spray reaches the next head.
  • Drip line with emitters that water each tree and shrub at its roots.
  • Trees, shrubs and turf installed to the landscape plans.
